 CERTIFIED BARISTA!!

Caffe Amadeus is proud to announce that Alex is now a certified barista!  What is this, you say?  Well, Alex spent countless hours studying and practicing for two examinations which measured her knowledge of coffee history, preparation, and customer service as well as practical performance of her barista skills.  She did this before an examiner from the International Academy of Specialty Coffee (I.A.S.C.) at the Coffeefest in Chicago.  We asked Alex what was the most challenging thing about the whole experience and she relayed, "I had to pull a double espresso and the grinder was the complete opposite of what we use in Amadeus.  My shot was short and I made it shorter because I couldn't see the top of the grinder!"  Alex is, how can we say this, "height-challenged"!

Anyway, Alex is giant in our eyes!   We are very proud of her because this means that she joins other professionals in the coffee industry as being recognized for her skills.  This is a first step in a long line of accomplishments for Alex as she pursues her dream of working in the field of specialty coffee.

Way to go Alex!

EVERYDAY IS A BEAUTIFUL DAY!!!

During the month of April, we at Caffe Amadeus donated HALF of the proceeds from our bean sales to two former military heroes to help with their expenses while they battle serious illness. You, our loyal customers also gave to them by donating to the jar we had out on the counter.
Together we raised a nice amount for them.

Lieutenant Colonel Brian Schill and Master Sergeant Tom Zepp wish to thank you for all of your generosity.
This Lenten season, we didn’t just give up chocolate or four-letter-words, we gave – and we made a difference for two people who weren’t expecting anything.
They’ll go on, fighting their illnesses, but they’ll never forget you – ever!
Alongside these two gentle family men, we at Caffé Amadeus thank you!

Remember, Every Day is a Beautiful Day!

Jittery Baristas
!!!

This is from last year's latte art competition in D.C.  I had to share this with all of you, (just click the title)!  Andi and Alex are on the CBS Morning Show video featuring latte art!   Enjoy!

And now for something completely different!

He was no jittery barista but we at Amadeus wish a belated(?) happy 324th birthday to Johann Sebastian Bach!  The old standard calendar shows his birthday as 31 March.  The new standard has it as the 21st.  Anyway, maybe we can do something on the 31st for Bach and 1 April for Franz Joesph Haydn.  If you see me in the coffeehouse, remind me!

Work, work, & more work...

I, (Bill), have been at my (other) full-time job so the website has taken a back-seat, sort of.

I plan to get on this with even more pix for the galleries and some interesting things in the world of Amadeus!  Of course, I return to work in a few days, so it may be a while.  In the meantime, come to Amadeus where you will find Andi, Alex, Thea, Heather, or myself happily serving you something totally awesome!

Thanks to all of you who come in during these tough economic times.  Andi & I want you to know that we will continue to give our very best for you in appreciation of your patronage.

Some of you still don't know that we are open on Sundays.  We have been open on Sundays since 13 April, 2008!!!  Please come in and see what others have found to be a very relaxing experience - complete with fresh brews and cool jazz!  Why not make a Sunday morning visit to Amadeus part of your new Sunday routine?  We are open from 9a to 2p.  While we close fairly early most days, we are always open to the idea of staying open later, if we get the support for that.

NOTE:  Saturday, 14 March, we are open only from 9a to 12noon as the St. Patrick's Day parade will start at 11a and wrap-up soon after.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

24 Feb, 2009,

Today we are brewing Celebes Sulawesi for the dark roast & Mexican Altura as the light.  This afternoon we will brew the always popular, Amadeus Blend.  Today's soup is Minestrone and we have sandwiches - while they last!

Chicago was fun!  I whole-heartedly recommend riding Amtrak as everyone was so very nice and the service was tops.  We got a sleeper car both ways and it's the only way to go!  The kids loved every minute of it!

More pix to come on the Chicago experience.

Thanks to everyone who came and kept our able-baristas busy during our coffee trip.

23 Feb, 2009

We are back!  Chicago was great and a good time was had by all!  Andi & Alexandra just missed the finals, but no matter - it was a blast.  You can see some photos in our new "Coffeefest Chicago" gallery.  Please feel free to browse!

Also, tonight we will have some Bach being played from 7p (that's right, 7p!).  Please see our "Happenings" page for details!

16 Feb, 2009
Being at my day job for a few days, it has been a little tough to update the website, but I have!!!   Check out the Gallery for quotes and tidbits about roasting and baking.

As things go, I have to run, but I have to mention Chicago.  This weekend, Andi and Alex will be competing in the Millrock Latte Art Competition at the Coffeefest on Navy Pier!  More on this tomorrow!

Trees Will Roll!

It survived the French Revolution but high winds toppled this towering beech tree, (a facus sylvatica purpura), planted for Marie Antionette more than two centuries ago at Versailles Palace.   It measured 82-feet and was one of the last trees in a hamlet dedicated to the former queen in the vast palace park.

After the wind storm, one that pounded France and Spain in mid-January, the beech's roots had grown moldy and shrunk so much that they could no longer counter balance the weight of its 72-foot span of branches.  The tree will be cut up and sole to paper makers.

Sunday, Coffee, Sunday - 25 January, 2009

Sundays are very relaxed (too relaxed?) at Amadeus.  We wear colors, as opposed to our traditional Barista Black.  We play jazz!  Jazz is a favorite of mine, (Bill), I like piano, bass, drums, and saxophone jazz and I have a nice collection of Miles, Coltrane, Cannonball, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Monk, and many others from the period of 1955 through 1961.  I also love Brazilian jazz (Stan Getz), which we play.

We are open until 2p.  Come in for cool jazz and hot Silesian Blend Java!

20 January, 2009...

Barack Obama and Peaches...

What's the connection?  Well, the word "barack" (pronounced "Ba-Rawtsk") in Hungarian means Peach!

Today we have, (while they last!), "Barack" Coffee cake!

We are brewing Costa Rican Tarrazu for the light roast and Celebes for the Dark.

Our soup today is Minestrone!  We will also have sandwiches - while they last too!

Enjoy your chilly day!
